5 Tricks to a Visually Pleasing Instagram

As a person I see Instagram as a platform to show others what I am doing, but the photographer side of me sees Instagram as a gallery space where I am allowed to show the world as I see it. Yet, one of the many struggles I have noticed is keeping the gallery consistent. I know I am not the only one so here are a few tricks that I have found to work when trying to keep a visually pleasing Instagram account.

-Vary Out Posing-
What I mean is, don't try to fake all of you pictures on Instagram. Sometimes candid shots are the most enjoyable because they capture laughter or serendipity. Don't be afraid to be yourself.
@looksharpsconnie
-Keep The Images Realistic-
This means, don't filter out an image. Minimal editing can be quite beautiful and keeps your Instagram gallery believable.
@alyssasage
-Use The Same Filter-
By using the same filter on every image, you will be able to create the aesthetic consistent. Just find your favorite, and keep with it.
@lrnhlnbck
-Keep a Consistent Color Scheme-
What I have found is that by uploading photos with similar colors schemes helps with the overall visual effect of the gallery. Otherwise transition them.
@danaeherrmann
-Tell a Story-
Don't be afraid to tell a story. A good story always catches attention of others.

What I Learned From an Evening With Tavi Gevinson

Yesterday I had the opportunity to listen to Tavi Gevinson speak. Although, I am not going to lie I did not know what to expect or what type of topics she would cover. I didn’t quite look up a lot of information about the presentation. To my surprise I found her speech to be quite comforting and personal, and not a speech on how to market yourself at a young age.

Who Is Tavi Gevinson?

Now, you might be wondering who is Tavi Gevinson? She is a writer, magazine editor, and actress who manages her magazine The Style Rookie. One more thing, she is also eighteen years old. Isn’t that impressive?

About Her Speech

One of the things Tavi spoke about was the amount of pressure the new youth of today faces when growing up.  She expressed that there is pressure to be original, which creates stress to stand out, but she also believes that its okay to fit in with what everyone else says. This really spoke to me, because as I write for this blog I put a lot effort to make it different, to make it stand out.

What I learned

What I learned from Tavi is that the effort to be different should never feel pressured, and that I that I should just write what I know and what I believe in. This is a different and more positive point of view, than trying to be different from everyone else every time. It’s  very comforting.

Tavi Gevinson’s talk was hosted by the WUD Distinguished Lecture Series Committee

UW Fashion Week: Cocktails & Couture

Left: Models wearing designs from local/ student designers. Right: Courtney Pelot, Moda Magazine's Social Media Director, wearing  Marchesa.

I am usually already in my pajamas by 9:00pm on Mondays but yesterday I had the pleasure to attend Cocktails & Couture, the first event of UWFW. The night was full of glamour, but one of the most important aspects of the night was to meet the student/ local designers and mingle with other individuals who are moved by fashion.

The event was put out by Moda Magazine, which is the student run organization that I am proudly a member of. Moda allows us as students to figure out how a magazine works through the method of trial and error. It's a place were most of the journalism and communication students can apply what they learn in class and also provides guidance to those who love to write on the side.

The next event of UWFW will be Swap & Shop event which will be held at Union South. the even starts at 6:00pm. I hope to see everyone there!

Events: UW Fashion Week

Moda Magazine will be hosting their 4th annual fashion week from March 9th through the 13th and as a proud member of the magazine I would like to invite my readers to the events.

Now, this is not like NYFW where there are fashion shows from beginning to end. In UW Fashion Week (UWFW), there are a series of events which take place.

The first event (March 9th) is Cocktails and Couture, were everyone gets together at the MMoCA at mingles together. Designs from student designers will be showcased at the event. The event starts at 8:00pm.

On the second event (March 11th) there will be a clothes Swap & Shop at one of the Unions. In this event people bring in old clothes that they are bored of and swap it with other clothes brought by other people. The event will be hosted from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and the room of the event will be posted on the TITU the day off.

On the Last night (March 13th) there will be the Finale Fashion Show. In this show, local designers and UW design students will showcase their work. The show will begin at 8:00pm, but students will be showcasing their portfolios at 7:00pm.

Hope to see everyone there!

Rapport: Volume 1

Minimalism

Minimalism is everywhere; it’s changing the way people dress, and the way people think. In a very noisy society, many people have found the concept of minimalism and being minimal to be quite soothing. It is for those reasons, that we have chosen it as the first topic of discussion.

New York Fall Ready-to- Wear 2015: Some of my Favorite Shows

There was quite a bit of hype in New York this past week as designers showed their new Fall 2015 Ready-to-Wear collections. There was a balance between beautiful form fitting dresses to sculptured and minimal coats on the runways. Below are some of my favorite shows this season.

Diane Von Fustenberg

It’s pretty hard not to make the assumption that Diane Von Fustenberg was slightly influenced by the new film “50 Shades of grey” this season. After all, her models did strut their stuff down her runway to the song “Earned it” by the Weeknd which was featured in the movie’s soundtrack. The collection overall evoked a sense of romance and seduction, but it never became vulgar. Brava Diane!

Rodarte

One of the things I often hear from my friends is that designers make unwearable clothes. My defense to those comments is usually that they are creating art. Rodarte made art, but they also made clothes. It was a beautiful balance just like the balance of nature and industrialism on their set. The flower embroidered skirts were absolutely beautiful, along with the closing dresses at the end.

Vera Wang

Is Vera Wang changing her look or is it just a phase? This was a very different look from Vera Wang. It somehow showed hints of Alexander Wang with the sporty skirts, but she balanced it with softer pieces such as the white sweater with the black sleeves. Overall, this collection intrigued me.

Anna Sui
I
I have a small feeling that the book "Where the Wild Things Are" had a small influence on designer Anna Sui this season. I am not going to lie, but I am in love with the retro bohemian influence of this collection. Designers seem to be moving away from bohemian prints and into this quake of minimalism that it was nice to see something a little different.

The Streets of San Miguel de Allende

The Streets of San Miguel de Allende

The colonial city of San Miguel is located in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Its vibrant colors and surrounding mountains make it a scenic escape for anyone suffering from this cold winter (specially the one we are having here in Wisconsin). Its a photographers dream. During the day, the brightly painted houses contrast with the clear blue sky. While at night, it transforms into an enchanted movie set lit by the rustic street lamps.

It's Just the Beggining

Lately, I have been giving it a lot of thought about what this blog should consist of. Trust me, this debate has been going on for about a month now. In the end, I always came back to the two main topics I believe to be good at- photography & fashion. So, I have broken down both of the topics to give you a little of what you might expect to see in the future.

Photography

Photography is very dear to me, and I intend to use this blog as an artistic outlet where I can share what I am currently thinking about. This portion of the blog is focused on what I am thinking, and what seems to be going on around my environment or how I perceive things to be. Expect to see sneak peeks of my upcoming work and the full finished product.

Fashion

The fashion aspect of this blog will be a little more social. I think balance is a key, and although I think I am pretty interesting most of you might not find that to be true. This portion of the blog will mostly consist of what is going on around the world of fashion, locally and around the world.
